Should I Spring Clean My Therapy Practice?

If you dread spring cleaning at home, the prospects of spring cleaning at your therapy practice may make you want to say “Ugh!” and pretend you never saw this post.

I get it.

But, you should still spring clean your practice anyway.

Although spring cleaning isn’t necessarily my idea of a fun time either, I do enjoy feeling confident that I have things in good shape in my practice.   This is especially true as we start inching our way towards the warmer days of summer.

I’d much rather be spending the beautiful days of late spring and summer outdoors being fully present and engaged with my family instead of distracted by disorganization or unfinished work.  With that in mind, I am motivated to take a look at things that need to be cleaned up in my practice, so I am better positioned to enjoy the coming months.

Spring cleaning also allows us an opportunity to take a closer look at the structure and systems that could help us avoid backlog in the future, so we can easily step away from work throughout the year.

Although I can’t do the actual spring cleaning for you, I’ve created  list of possible areas to focus on when spring cleaning your private practice in order to help you get started.

Spring Clean Your Therapy Practice

Tips

  • Only choose a few areas to focus on cleaning up this spring.
  • Try to choose at least one area of focus that is kind of “fun” to work on and one area of focus where you know some spring cleaning could make a huge impact on your sense of overwhelm

Possible Areas for Focus

Please don’t allow this list to overwhelm you.  It is intended to give you a whole range of possibilities to consider.

Physical Space

  • Desk or other work surface
  • Filing Cabinet
  • Computer (de-clutter & organize desk top icons/folders/old documents)
  • Supplies utilized in therapy (reorganize/replace as needed)
  • Your bookshelf

Documentation & Clinical Follow Up

  • Session Notes
  • Diagnostic Assessments/Intake Summaries
  • Treatment Plans/Treatment Plan Updates
  • Termination Summaries
  • Coordination of Care with other professionals

Communications

  • Email inbox
  • Voicemail inbox

Financial Matters

  • Client billing
  • Follow up on unresolved billing matters
  • Tracking income/expenses
  • Creating a system to organize documentation for taxes

Marketing

  • Website updates & tweaks, remove/replace outdated information
  • Social media feed

Where will you focus your time and energy during spring cleaning this year?   Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

Happy Spring Cleaning!

Take Care,
Sarah

P.S.  Vibrant Therapist Virtual Work Sessions are 2 hour co-working sessions in which therapists carve out dedicated time to work a task of their choosing, but get the added support and accountability of working alongside other therapists via Zoom.    These work sessions would be great for working on spring cleaning your practice.
